Byrd Nest is a classic two-story Key West home, complete with a white picket fence, a covered front porch, and blue shutters, on a quiet residential street in Old Town. You can stroll over to Duval Street, and the house is still calm when you come back. Inside, big windows let the island light in from every side, and the open layout keeps everyone together, whether someone's cooking, someone's stretched out on the sofa, or someone is already halfway to the pool.
Coffered ceilings with warm wood inlays stretch over the living room, and white shiplap keeps the whole place feeling breezy. The chef's kitchen is made for actual meals, with a navy island that seats four, a stainless range, and plenty of counter space to prep side by side. The dining table for five works just as well for a slow breakfast as it does for a late dinner, and a front-loading washer and dryer mean you can pack light and rinse the salt out of swimsuits between beach days.
There are four bedrooms, and the layout gives everyone a bit of room. Upstairs, the primary suite has a king bed, and a second bedroom has a queen, both with ceiling fans to keep the air moving. Step out onto the second-floor porch for a coffee up in the treetops. Another queen bedroom sits on the main floor. The bathrooms are bright and clean-lined, including one with a glass-walled marble shower. Out back, a separate cottage with a full futon makes a little hideaway of its own, good for a friend, a teen, or whoever calls it first.
The backyard is a private pocket of palms and tropical greenery wrapped around the pool. Cool off in the water, claim one of the two lounge chairs, or settle onto the cushioned bench with a book. Two more chairs round out the seating, the Nexgrill BBQ takes care of dinner, and the outdoor shower keeps the sand and sunscreen outside where they belong. In the evening, the front porch is the spot to watch the neighborhood wind down.
Bayview Park is about two blocks away, and the historic Key West Cemetery, with its above-ground tombs and wandering chickens, makes for a surprisingly lovely morning walk. Duval Street, the Hemingway Home and Museum, the Key West Lighthouse, and Higgs Beach are all roughly a 15 to 20-minute walk. Grab a bike and you'll reach the Southernmost Point, the Historic Seaport, and the sunset crowd at Mallory Square in minutes. Fort Zachary Taylor's beach is an easy ride when you want a full day by the water.
