All we can say is WOW! This newly remodeled and professionally decorated two-bedroom condo is possibly the nicest rental in Northstar Village. It sits in the Iron Horse North building, in the middle of Northstar Village, a few floors up from the shops, the skating rink, and the gondola plaza, so the distance between your front door and the first chair of the day is measured in steps rather than miles.
Inside, the condo runs open and bright. High ceilings keep the living space from feeling like a mountain condo box, a stone fireplace anchors the seating area, and the kitchen sits close enough to the dining table that whoever is cooking stays in the conversation. The deck looks out toward the mountain, which is worth a cup of coffee in the morning and a jacket at night when the Village lights come on below.
Both bedrooms are built like primaries. Each holds a king, each has its own ensuite bathroom, and each of those bathrooms has a tub as well as a shower, which is the detail that matters most after a full day in the cold. Two couples can share this place without anyone drawing the short straw, and a family gets a real door between the grown-ups and everyone else. There is a shelf of board games for the stretch of the evening when nobody wants to put boots back on, Monopoly and chess included.
The building handles the practical side. There is an elevator, so nobody is hauling gear up a staircase. Entry is step-free and the doorways run wider than 32 inches, which makes this one of the rare mountain places that thoughtfully accommodates guests with a variety of needs. EV charging is available in the resort parking lot. Down at the recreation center, guests have access to the heated pool and spa, which stays open through winter and is the correct ending to a ski day.
Northstar itself is the reason to be here. The resort covers 3,000 acres with 19 lifts, snowmaking across the mountain, and close to 100 trails, and it does not go quiet when the snow melts. Summer brings lift-served mountain biking, an 18-hole golf course, and hiking straight out of the Village. The Village stays busy year-round with restaurants, shops, ice skating in the winter months, live music, and fire pits that fill up around sunset. A complimentary shuttle runs the resort, so the car can stay parked for most of the stay.
When you want to leave the resort, historic downtown Truckee is about fifteen minutes out, a brick main street of coffee shops, bookstores, galleries, and dinners worth lingering over, with the Amtrak depot sitting right in the middle of it. Kings Beach and the north shore of Lake Tahoe are a similar drive in the other direction, good for a swim and a lakeside lunch in summer and one of the better winter drives anywhere. Palisades Tahoe, Donner Lake, and Sand Harbor are all inside an hour, and Reno-Tahoe International is roughly forty-five minutes east, which makes a long weekend up here far easier to pull off than it sounds.
It is a small, comfortable, well-placed base in a resort that gives you as much or as little to do as you want.
