Roundhouse at Northstar is hard to miss on the drive in. It's round, sided in redwood, and tucked behind a stand of pines, and the inside is just as distinctive. Warm wood runs from the floors to the open-beam ceiling, there are windows on nearly every side, and the trees sit close enough that every room looks out into the forest.
The main living area is where the group gathers. Deep, low seating faces the TV, the ceiling rises high overhead, and afternoon light moves slowly across the wood walls. The kitchen opens right off this space, with four stools at the island, black appliances, and cabinets stocked for cooking a proper meal. It's close enough to the dining table that whoever's at the stove never misses the conversation. The table sits under a row of windows with nothing outside but trees, and there's a seat for everyone.
The primary bedroom is the quietest room in the house, with a king bed under a peaked wood ceiling and its own attached bathroom. The second bedroom has a queen bed, and the third is a bunk room with a full-over-twin bunk that kids usually claim before the bags are even inside. These two bedrooms share a full bathroom, and a half bath makes busy mornings easier.
The top floor holds the sauna, tucked up under the roofline. After a day on the mountain, this is where the evening begins. Go from the sauna out to the hot tub on the deck, or do it in reverse. Either way, you end up under the pines with cold air on your face and warmth still in your shoulders.
The deck feels like a second living room. An outdoor dining table with an umbrella is set up for long dinners, and the grill covers the nights nobody feels like cooking inside. Mornings out here are for coffee and birdsong. In the evening, low sun filters through the trees and the whole deck turns gold.
Northstar is right outside your door. The lifts, ice rink, shops, and restaurants at The Village at Northstar are just minutes away, and the Northstar Golf Course is even closer. Guests also have access to the Northstar Recreation Center, with tennis and pickleball courts, basketball, bocce, pools and hot tubs, a game center, sauna, gym, and locker rooms (an entry fee may apply). A free seasonal shuttle runs door to door around the resort, and you can book a pickup at the house through the Northstar Village Transit app. In summer, the hiking trails and mountain bike park are close by.
Downtown Truckee is about ten minutes away, with its historic railroad main street and plenty of good places for dinner. Head the other direction and you'll reach Kings Beach and Lake Tahoe's north shore in 15 to 20 minutes, and Tahoe City in about half an hour. Just past Truckee, Donner Lake and Donner Memorial State Park are summer favorites for paddleboarding. Reno-Tahoe International Airport is under an hour's drive, so even a long weekend here is easy to plan.
