The lake earns the drive. Locals call it the Dragon for its shape --- long, narrow, and branching into hundreds of coves and inlets across 165 miles of shoreline, plenty of them worth a whole day. Largemouth and smallmouth bass, white bass, crappie, catfish and bluegill are all in there, and summer water temperatures sit in the mid-70s. When you want pavement under you again, downtown Paso Robles and the surrounding wine country are about forty minutes southeast, roughly twenty-five miles of good road through the foothills.
