Some trips start the second you unlock the door. Chasing Sunshine is that kind of place --- a bright, easygoing five-bedroom in the heart of Port Aransas, built around an open main floor where the light comes in high and nobody gets stuck in a corner by themselves.
The living, dining, and kitchen spaces all run together under vaulted, beamed ceilings, so the cook is still part of the conversation. The kitchen is the anchor: soft coastal-blue cabinetry, a long island with bar stools pulled up to it, and
enough counter space to break down a cooler of fresh catch without anyone getting in the way. The dining table seats six for a proper sit-down, and the living room takes over from there with deep, comfortable seating and a TV for the hour when everyone's sunburned and quiet. A built-in window bench tucked beneath the stairs turns into the reading spot, the puzzle spot, or the place the kids claim first.
Five bedrooms mean nobody's negotiating. Three of them are set with king beds, a fourth has a queen, and the fifth is the one the younger crowd calls dibs on --- a twin-over-double bunk with room to spare. Three full bathrooms keep the morning-before-the-beach shuffle painless, and the in-home washer and dryer earns its keep somewhere around day three, when every towel in the house has been to the sand and back.
Outside is where the day slows down. A covered lounge sits just off the house with cushioned seating in the shade --- the natural landing spot for morning coffee before anyone's ready to talk, and for the long, salt-air stretch of the afternoon when the sun finally lets up. Beyond it, guests have access to the shared pool, a shaded gazebo, and grills for cooking dinner outside while the light goes gold over the rooftops.
The location is the quiet advantage. The East Avenue G beach access sits about a half-mile straight down the same street --- an easy walk, a two-minute cart ride, and close enough that a spontaneous sunrise trip to the water actually happens. The
grocery is a fifth of a mile up the road for the run you forgot to make, and the whole of Alister Street is under a mile north, with the seafood counters, ice cream windows, and beach shops that give Port A its unhurried, flip-flops-and-golf-carts character.
There's more to it than the sand, too. Roberts Point Park is about a mile out, where the fishing pier looks over the ship channel and the dolphins put on a show for anyone patient enough to sit on the seawall. The Leonabelle Turnbull Birding Center is a short ride west, all boardwalk and roseate spoonbills and herons stalking the shallows, and the trails at Charlie's Pasture open onto salt flats and big coastal sky. Horace Caldwell Pier draws the early risers with rods, the free ferry runs north around the clock, and Mustang Island State Park is a straight shot down the island when you want a wider, emptier stretch of Gulf.
Come back sandy, rinse off, claim a chair under the gazebo, and let the evening take its time. That's the whole idea here.
