Some barns are converted. The Bear Barn feels like it was reimagined with a much bigger idea in mind. Set on more than 150 acres of countryside, this historic 1860 property brings rustic character, wide-open scenery, and a peaceful private retreat together in one unforgettable setting.
Inside, The Bear Barn centers the overnight stay around a private second-level apartment designed for two guests. The apartment includes a full kitchen with bar seating, a dining table that seats 6 and expands to 8, a sitting area, and a desk/workspace for slower mornings or quieter moments between plans. Guests will also have access to the property's dramatic lodge-style great room, where soaring timber beams, antler chandeliers, leather seating, mounted wildlife décor, and a massive stone fireplace create a memorable gathering space with true countryside character. Four additional half bathrooms are available onsite, adding convenience during events, gatherings, or time spent enjoying the larger barn spaces.
For overnight stays, the apartment keeps the layout private and simple. One bedroom and one bathroom create an easy, self-contained space, while the kitchen, dining area, and sitting area give guests more room than a standard suite. It works especially well for guests who want a countryside stay with historic character, practical comforts, and plenty of breathing room beyond the door.
Outside, the property keeps the same balance of scenery and open-air gathering space. Mountain views roll across the horizon, with a pond below adding to the calm, wide-open feel of the grounds. A fire pit with 8 Adirondack chairs sets up long evenings under the sky, while outdoor dining areas, patio umbrellas, benches, and a covered seating area create plenty of places to gather in the fresh air. The private pickleball court brings another built-in activity, and cornhole and bocce ball keep the lawn-game energy going between meals, fireside drinks, and time spent taking in the pond, fields, and mountain backdrop.
The setting is the real advantage. The Bear Barn sits in Dover Plains, in New York's Harlem Valley, where rolling Dutchess County farmland, quiet back roads, and mountain views give the property its away-from-it-all feel without leaving the region hard to reach. Nearby, the wider Hudson Valley opens up with small-town dining, antique shops, farms, wineries, and scenic day trips through places like Amenia, Millbrook, Pawling, and Rhinebeck. Dover Stone Church, the Harlem Valley Rail Trail, and surrounding preserves offer easy hiking and fresh-air options. At the same time, Metro-North access in the area feels manageable for guests coming from New York City. Whether the plan is a countryside retreat, a milestone stay, or a quiet escape surrounded by open land, The Bear Barn puts guests in a peaceful corner of the Hudson Valley with plenty to explore beyond the property.
Please note that additional interior event and hosting spaces may be available separately for events, receptions, meetings, or other gatherings. These spaces are not included with the standard overnight stay and must be booked directly with the property owner.

Comprised of quaint towns, each with their own charming main street, upstate New York's Hudson Valley is famed for its natural beauty and seasonal produce. After all, it was here that inspired an entire artistic movement of Romantic painters who captured the area's rolling hills, colorful foliage, and pastoral setting. View the landscapes in person by hiking the Catskill Mountains. Then, visit local farms where there's a lot to pick: apples in the fall, strawberries in the summer, and vegetables in between.
