Round, redwood-sided, and half-hidden behind a stand of pines, The Roundhouse has a shape you notice on the drive in --- and an interior that lives up to it. Warm wood runs from floor to open-beam ceiling, windows face out on nearly every side, and the trees press close enough that the forest does most of the decorating.
The main living space is where everyone lands. Deep, low seating gathers around the TV, the ceiling opens up overhead, and light moves across the wood all afternoon. Just off it, the kitchen has been brought fully current --- a quartet of stools at the island, stainless appliances, cabinets stocked for actual cooking rather than reheating --- and it sits close enough to the dining table that whoever's chopping stays in the conversation. That table seats the whole group under a bank of windows with nothing but green outside.
Three bedrooms sleep the group comfortably. The primary is the quiet one: a king bed under a peaked wood ceiling, with its own bathroom attached. The second bedroom holds a queen bed, while the third is a dedicated bunk room with a full-over-twin bunk bed --- an easy favorite for the kids. These two bedrooms share a full bathroom, and a half bath keeps the morning traffic moving.
Climb to the top floor and you'll find the reason The Roundhouse gets rebooked --- a sauna, tucked under the roofline, waiting after a day on the mountain. Take it in whatever order suits you: sauna first, then out to the hot tub on the deck, or the reverse. Either way the ending is the same, sitting under the pines with the cold air on your face and the heat still in your shoulders.
The deck is the other half of the house. It's open to the sky, with a dining table and umbrella set up for long dinners and a grill for the nights nobody wants to cook indoors. Mornings out here are all birdsong and coffee steam; evenings, the light comes through the trees sideways and the whole deck goes gold.
As for where you are --- this is Northstar, so the lifts, ice rink, restaurants, and shops at The Village at Northstar are just minutes away. Northstar's recreation center is close by too, and it's a small resort in its own right: tennis and pickleball courts, basketball, bocce, pools and hot tubs, a game center, sauna, gym, and locker rooms. Getting around Northstar is easy, too, with a free seasonal door-to-door shuttle available via app, with pickup directly at the property. The Northstar golf course and its summer trail network are just as near, and the mountain bike park runs all summer. Historic Downtown Truckee, with its train-town main street, breweries, and genuinely good dinners, is about ten minutes out. Push another fifteen and you're at Lake Tahoe's north shore beaches in Kings Beach and Tahoe City; head the other way for Donner Lake, paddleboards, and the state park. Reno-Tahoe International Airport is approximately an hour away, which makes a long weekend here easier than it has any right to be.
Come for the powder, come for the pines. Stay because of the sauna.
