Plenty of ski trips are decided by one small thing: how far you have to walk in your boots. Here, barely at all. Little Moose sits on the fourth floor of one of the more polished buildings at the base of Winter Park Resort, with the village, the gondola, and a row of restaurants and shops right across the way. Mornings start with coffee and a look at the snow report, not a drive and a parking hunt.
The studio is simple in the best way. A queen bed tucks into the right corner and a queen sleeper sofa sits beside it, so four people fit without anyone drawing the short straw. One bathroom with a shower. A shelf of games waits for the afternoon a storm rolls in, or for the evening when nobody has the legs to go back out. Heat runs off the thermostat, and like most of Winter Park, the building was designed without air conditioning because it simply does not need it up here. On the rare warm afternoon, crack the window and pull the box fan out of the closet. That is genuinely the whole trick.
Downstairs, the shared amenities give Little Moose another place to unwind without leaving the building. Head to the amenity deck for a soak in the large shared outdoor hot tub after a day on the mountain, gather around the outdoor fireplace as the temperature drops, or fire up one of the BBQ grills for an easy dinner outside. A shared pool adds another option for downtime, while the community laundry room is there whenever the base layers need a rinse---which, after a few ski days, they probably will.
Winter Park Resort spreads across more than 3,000 acres, from mellow groomers on the front side to the bumps and trees of Mary Jane, which locals will tell you is the real reason they moved here. Denver is about a ninety-minute drive over Berthoud Pass, and in winter the Winter Park Express train runs straight from Union Station to the base, so you can skip the pass altogether. The town of Winter Park is five minutes down the road with a free shuttle running the route, and it has the breweries, coffee, and gear shops you would hope for.
Come summer, the same lifts that carry skiers carry mountain bikes up to Trestle, one of the best-built bike parks in the country. There is fly fishing on the Fraser River, alpine hiking straight out of the valley, and Grand Lake and the western edge of Rocky Mountain National Park sit less than an hour north. It is one of the few mountain towns where the summer is arguably better than the winter, and you get both from the same front door.
