The back of this property is really the whole point. A long rectangular pool sits at the center of it, edged with a tanning ledge for the people who want to be in the water without committing to it, and wrapped on every side by a tall bamboo hedge that turns the yard into its own private room. Lounge chairs line the deck. String lights run overhead. And under the covered patio, a few steps from the water, there's a full-size pool table --- the rare setup where nobody has to choose between the game and the sun.

The rest of the yard keeps up. A linear fire pit anchors a set of lounge chairs for the hour after sundown, when the desert finally cools and nobody's ready to go in. There's shaded seating for the hottest part of the afternoon, a natural gas grill for the evening cookout, and cornhole set up on the grass. The Encore was built for the trip where everyone comes along, and the yard is where that trip actually happens.

Inside, the home runs on a single level with an open plan and a lot of nerve. The living room stretches out under a beamed ceiling with an oversized sectional, a mounted TV, and windows on two sides pulling in that flat desert light. It opens straight into a dining area set beneath two woven pendants, and on into a kitchen with an island, counter stools, stainless appliances, and full cookware and utensil sets. There's a Keurig and a drip maker --- one for the single-cup people, one for whoever wants a pot going by seven --- plus a blender, toaster, tea kettle, and both a Brita and a glass pitcher for the counter. A separate laundry room with a hanging rack handles the pool towels and everything else a long stay throws at it, and a tucked-away desk covers the calls you couldn't get out of.

The design is the thing you'll notice second. Each bedroom is built around its own color --- deep terracotta in one, forest green in another, warm mustard in the next --- against white walls and pale wood floors, with real art on the walls rather than the usual filler. It's confident without being precious.

Six bedrooms and four full bathrooms give fifteen guests room to actually spread out. Three rooms are anchored by king beds, a fourth has a queen, and a fifth is set with two queens for families traveling together or friends doubling up. The sixth pairs a queen with a twin. Every room has its own TV and a ceiling fan, and the bathrooms are done in dark vanities and glass walk-in showers --- including one
with a full multi-head panel --- so the morning rush never turns into a queue.

As for where you are: this pocket of Indio sits at the center of the Coachella Valley's calendar. The polo fields at Empire Polo Club are about five minutes out, which is as close as it gets for Coachella and Stagecoach weekends, and the fairgrounds --- home of the National Date Festival every February --- are practically around the corner. Fantasy Springs is a few minutes on for concerts, bowling, and golf, and the Coachella Valley History Museum is worth an hour for the story behind all those date palms. Speaking of which, Shields Date Garden is ten minutes away, and the date shake earns the detour on its own.

Push further and the valley opens up. Indian Wells Tennis Garden, where the BNP Paribas Open takes over every March, is about fifteen minutes west, and Old Town La Quinta is a similar drive for its Sunday farmers market, boutiques, and patio dining. El Paseo's galleries in Palm Desert and The Living Desert Zoo and Gardens are both around twenty minutes on. For a day outside, the slot canyons and ladders of Painted Canyon are about a half-hour southeast, while Joshua Tree National Park's Cottonwood entrance is roughly forty-five minutes away. Palm Springs International Airport is about thirty-five minutes away, which keeps the getting-here part simple.

Come for a festival weekend, a golf trip, a family reunion, or the plain fact that it's seventy-five and sunny here while everyone back home is scraping their windshield. Rack the table, light the fire pit, and let the afternoon run long.
