The lake fills the windows before you've set your bags down. This house sits on about eighty feet of its own shoreline in Martins Cove, a quiet, wooded corner on the north shore of Lake Wallenpaupack, and it's built into the slope so two full stories look straight out at the water. Neighbors are few and set back in the trees. On most days the only traffic is a boat drifting across the cove.
Covewood is a custom home on three levels, and the main floor is where it feels most like a lake house. The living room rises into a cedar cathedral ceiling, natural wood runs through the whole space, and a stone fireplace climbs from floor to ceiling on one wall. The plan is open, so the living room, dining table and kitchen share one long view of the water. Coffee happens at the breakfast bar. Dinner happens at the big table, with the lake going dark behind it.
Downstairs is the second place to land. A deep sectional faces a big TV, and pub-height tables and a small dining nook make room for card games, puzzles and late snacks while the main floor stays quiet. Doors open straight out to the lower deck, so nobody has to walk through the house to get outside.
Four bedrooms sleep ten, and every level has a full bathroom, which makes mornings easier than you'd expect with a full house. The primary has a king, and one bedroom sits on the main level with a view of the lake. Two more bedrooms each have a queen. The bunk room is set up for the kids with a full-over-twin and a twin-over-twin, and it has the best window in the house, looking out over the treetops to the water. Expect the kids to claim it first.
Outside, two lakefront decks run the length of the house, both covered, so rain doesn't end the evening. The upper deck has cushioned seating and a griddle for burgers and pancakes. The lower deck lines up Adirondack chairs facing the water. From there a stone path winds down through the laurel to the shoreline, where chairs sit right at the edge of the lake and kayaks and paddle boards wait on the rack. When the sun goes down, the outdoor fire pit takes over, and it's the easiest place to end up after dinner.
Summer is swimming, paddling the cove and fishing right off your own shoreline, with an early cast before anyone else is awake. Fall brings the color across the far shore. Winter is quiet, cold air on the deck and then back inside by the fire. Once the lake freezes over, ice fishing on Wallenpaupack is a local tradition, and the cove makes a peaceful place to watch the shanties dot the ice. A washer and dryer help with longer stays in any season.
Lake Wallenpaupack is one of the largest lakes in Pennsylvania, and the north shore is its quieter side. Hawley is a short drive for coffee, antiques and dinner in town, along with the restored Hawley Silk Mill and scenic boat tours on the lake. Lacawac Sanctuary has easy trails and a glacial lake of its own, Promised Land State Park is close by for hiking and more water, and the Dorflinger Glass Museum sits in the woods at White Mills. In winter, Ski Big Bear at Masthope Mountain is within easy reach, and Bethel Woods, the original Woodstock site, makes a good day trip across the river. The whole area is about two and a half hours from New York City and Philadelphia, which is close enough for a long weekend and far enough to feel like a real one.
