Waccabuc Lake House

An hour from New York City, the back roads of northern Westchester wind through stone walls and old hardwoods until they reach Waccabuc, a hamlet built around a chain of quiet lakes. Waccabuc Lake House sits right on the water. Swim off the shore, cast a line for the afternoon, or paddle out in the kayak provided with the home (available for use with a signed liability waiver) and watch the sunset color the whole lake.

Back on land, the private pool is ringed with loungers and shade umbrellas, and there are two ways to eat outside: an open-air table on the patio and a light-filled covered dining area with skylights and walls of windows, comfortable even when the weather has other plans. A wide lawn wraps the house, so there's room for lawn games, morning coffee in the grass, and kids running loose.

Inside, the layout stays open and easy. The living room centers on a fireplace, a den lined floor-to-ceiling with bookshelves invites slow mornings, and a dedicated TV room with a big screen and deep sofas handles movie nights. The navy-walled dining room seats the whole group of 10 under a brass chandelier, steps from a kitchen with stainless appliances, marble-look counters, and a blue island made for grazing. A dedicated office keeps remote workdays productive, and a washer and dryer make longer stays simple.

Five bedrooms sleep 10. Three hold queen beds, one holds a double, and the king suite comes with its own fireplace and private entrance. Cribs in two of the bedrooms make traveling with little ones easier.

The surrounding towns are half the charm. Katonah is a short drive west for its walkable village, the Katonah Museum of Art, concerts at Caramoor, and Metro-North trains to Grand Central, while Bedford's historic green, shops, and restaurants are just down the road. Ward Pound Ridge Reservation, Westchester's largest park, is about 10 minutes away with 40-plus miles of trails, and Ridgefield, Connecticut's boutiques and the Aldrich Contemporary Art Museum sit just across the state line.
