Closer to home, the Will Abell Memorial Trail is an easy, well-marked loop through the forest, and the Pinnacles Trailhead up Highway 173 trades a steeper climb for big granite views. Come winter, Snow Valley is about a half hour east and the Big Bear resorts sit under an hour out, which makes this a true four-season basecamp in the San Bernardino Mountains.
