Tall pines, a quiet street, and a black A-frame roofline rising out of the trees set the tone before you've even unloaded the car. The Blackwood A-Frame feels far from everything, yet Snow Summit is a three-minute drive and Big Bear Marina is only six.
Step inside and the room opens straight up, with wood ceilings reaching 36 feet to the peak and tall windows looking out into the forest. Motorized blinds let the morning light pour in, or keep it out when someone's sleeping late. The deep sectional in front of the fireplace is where the group ends up after skiing, and where movie night usually happens.
Cooks will be happy here. The kitchen is stocked almost entirely with Crate & Barrel kitchenware and includes a 12-foot island, double ovens, a beverage fridge, and a KitchenAid stand mixer. There's plenty of space for people to gather at the island without getting in the way of dinner. Put a record on the turntable, pick something from the collection, and pull out a board game once the dishes are done.
Sleep is taken seriously. Both king bedrooms have Casper mattresses and pillows along with private bathrooms. The third bedroom is built for younger guests, or anyone young at heart, with a full bed, twin bunk beds, an extra twin, a retro arcade cabinet, and a projector for late-night movies. In all, the home sleeps eight with three full bathrooms. Every bedroom has Apple TV, a Samsung washer and dryer handle ski gear and lake towels, and a Pack 'n Play and high chair are available on request.
The fenced backyard is its own little retreat. A small pond with running water sits among the trees, surrounded by a hot tub, fire pit, swing, hammock, and an outdoor dining table. Take your coffee out to the pond, stretch out in the hammock for a while, then finish the night in the hot tub.
Bringing an electric car? There's an EV charger right out front.
Winter days are easy from here. Snow Summit is practically next door and Bear Mountain is just a few minutes past it, so you can catch first chair without an early alarm and be back in the hot tub by mid-afternoon. When summer comes, the marina puts boating and paddling on Big Bear Lake within easy reach, and the mountains turn into hiking and biking trails. The Big Bear Alpine Zoo is around the corner, and the Village's restaurants and shops are only a few minutes away.
Plan a ski weekend in January or a lake trip in July. Either way, the Blackwood A-Frame makes it hard to leave.
