San Diego draws large groups with its coastline, water activities, and outdoor dining culture. Groups find everything from family reunions to bachelorette weekends and destination weddings, all centered around the water and year-round sunshine. A single large home becomes your group's private beach resort. Groups prefer staying in one home in San Diego over booking multiple hotel rooms because they stay connected, cook together, share common spaces, and often cut nightly costs in half. That single home becomes the heart of the trip rather than just a place to sleep.
We booked this home at the last minute after our original booking was cancelled just a week before our trip. (BTW, Janice, with airbnb was AWESOME in helping us obtain new accommodations at the last minute, and Airbnb even paid the difference between the cost of this home and the one we had originally reserved). We had planned to stay in a home 2 blocks from South Mission Beach, so for us, location-wise this home was not ideal. Although it is technically within walking distance to the ocean, you must go down 36 steps and then traverse a LOT of rocks and general ocean muck before you can get to the sandy party of the beach, which was not at all kid-friendly as it is a designated surfing area. Having to drive to the beach was a bit of a downer for us, but we made the best of it. This house was clean and fairly well stocked as far as kitchen and bathroom items go. When my father spilled coffee beans in the kitchen and could not find a broom, after a quick text to the host, a broom and dustpan were delivered immediately. The layout of the home worked very well for our crew, which consisted of my family of 4, another couple and their 3 kiddos, plus my folks. There was a downstairs master suite that my folks enjoyed, and the master suite upstairs was HUGE. All of the bedrooms were spacious and the beds were comfortable. We truly appreciated the extra sleeping pads and the abundance of clean linens and towels. Everyone in our group also really enjoyed the outdoor amenities, including the very private, grassy backyard, huge outdoor dining table and firepit. Unfortunately the grill was VERY difficult to operate, as the knobs lacked labels and it was unclear how to turn it on. Multiple members of our party spent considerable amounts of time every night trying to get the grill started. Once it was started, it worked fine. In addition, on our first night at the home, we got yelled at by the neighbor to the rear, who told us to "take the party to the rooftop deck" even though we were just chatting around the fire. This was very frustrating as there were only 4 adults outside at the time and we were not being very loud. Plus it resulted in all of us being somewhat on edge about noise issues for the remainder of our stay. It was also pretty clear that the neighborhood in general is NOT in support of this property being an short-term rental. One last thing to note is that although coffee was provided, there was only enough to make 4 pots, and for our weeklong stay, that was absolutely not sufficient. When I contacted the host to inquire about additional coffee, I was told that they provide "only a starter pack." In my opinion, accommodations should include enough coffee to last the entire stay, especially when we are paying in excess of $8,000 for a weeklong stay. I raise these issues in my review only because they are things that I wish I had know before we chose this particular property. If issues like these bother you, this is probably not the place for you. All in all, however, we had a great trip, and would recommend this property to anyone who is willing to deal with neighbors who don't want them there, and is not worried about being within walking distance to a kid-friendly, swimmable beach.
Our group of 14 dudes had an absolute blast at this place!
Location is truly phenomenal. Very close to a plethora of fun stuff, including the huge farmer's market on Saturday where we spent literally hours eating and exploring. Only a ~15 minute drive to Mission, Pacific, and Ocean Beaches. We all actually walked to two of the three events we went to over the weekend - that's how central it is. For activities in and around downtown, you can't beat it.
Balconies were great, particularly the rooftop patio and the one on the main/kitchen level. The one adjacent to the master is nice as well, but just didn't get used as much. We grilled burgers on the rooftop patio at least twice, were up there with drinks for sunset every evening, and hung out up there at night around the gas firepit. Lots of stairs to get up there (and around in general). But it just meant that we got a little extra exercise. It wasn't too much of a hassle.
Beds, bedrooms, and bathrooms were definitely adequate for our needs, which, with 14 dudes, were not insignificant by any means. We managed to sleep all 14 of us and stay relatively comfortable (though one guy did bring himself an air mattress because he didn't want to share a bed). But we didn't have any major problems with bathrooms, bedrooms, beds, kitchen, etc. The master bedroom and bathroom are very nice; those staying there loved the open layout of the bathroom + shower. Also, the open layout of the kitchen and dining area made that level a very popular hangout spot. Plus, that room has the chandelier.
We found the place to be quite true to the description and photos. Although there is a little wear and tear starting to show in certain areas, such as the hardwood in many places, those are mostly cosmetic. It's still up-to-date, well-equipped, and works. The parking was actually not that bad, even with ~6 vehicles between all of us.
Overall, we all loved the place and may have to book it again the next time we go to SD with this group!
Enjoyed our visit immensely. The home is quite spacious and the beds are comfortable. Although there is AC and is does work, the downstairs bedrooms never got quite as cool as we would’ve liked (in august). The exterior of the home desperately needs some TLC. The front and back yards are pure dirt- literally no landscaping which is really an eye sore. While there is a BBQ, corn hole, and a hammock out back, no one in our group wanted to be out there because it wasn’t “pretty” and was covered in dirt. The views of the ocean, however, are delightful. The master is gorgeous and has a large shower, but rooms downstairs also need some TLC. No TVs downstairs, no wall decor, paint needs some freshening up and carpet has got to go. It would’ve been nice to feel a bit more luxurious considering the price tag. (Plastic shower curtains, window treatments from Target) Oh, and there is an abandoned car in the adjacent empty lot right next to the home that’s covered in dirt obviously having been there a while. While there was some shampoo, wash and lotion- the bottles are quite small and you will definitely need to bring your own. Bring tissues too, there were none. Kitchen is huge and the focal point of the home. Was stocked with mostly everything- except things like saran wrap or aluminum foil if you’re doing some cooking while there. Wifi worked but was spotty with too many devices plugged in. TV in living room has Roku and there were plenty of board games which my family enjoyed. A few easy fixes and the home would be absolutely perfect. PS- there are some neighbors who play the drums and practiced every night. Not intolerable and not for long, but it was during the “quiet hours.”
